Sleep Services
Is it hard for you to get out of bed in the morning? Are you feeling irritable or stressed? Are you often tired during the day? If so, you might have a sleep disorder.
Millions of people are affected by one or more of the 100 known sleep disorders. These disorders, such as sleep apnea, can lead to major health problems such as stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure and depression.
A sleep study is an evaluation to determine if you have a sleep disorder. Just like an X-ray uncovers broken bones, a sleep study can uncover a problem in your sleep patterns. Stop suffering through sleepless nights. Let the trained sleep technologists at the Rex Sleep Disorders Center help you get the good night’s sleep you deserve.
Sleep Disorders We Treat
The Rex Sleep Disorders Center specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of sleep disorders, including:
- Narcolepsy
- Parasomnias (REM sleep disorder behavior; sleepwalking; sleep talking)
- Periodic limb movement (restless legs syndrome)
- Sleep apnea
We offer in-lab sleep studies and home sleep tests, sometimes called HSTs, for adults. We also do pediatric sleep studies for children age five and older.
What to Expect: In-Lab Sleep Study
Our in-lab sleep studies allow us to fully understand sleep patterns and diagnose a wide range of sleep disorders. Our team will monitor various brain activities and body systems and their relationships while you sleep.
All in-lab sleep studies are conducted overnight under the direction of a medical director who is board-certified in sleep medicine and with the assistance of trained sleep technologists.
During your sleep study at the Rex Sleep Disorders Center, we use sensors to collect information about how your body functions while you sleep. The sensors are attached to your chest, legs and index finger and are fastened around your head. These sensors are pain-free and attached using gel and latex-free tape. The information we get from the sensors helps us identify your different sleep stages and classify various sleep problems.
Your visit to the sleep center includes placing the sensors, 6-8 hours of sleep and removal of the sensors in the morning. Our sleep study rooms are similar to hotel rooms. They feature full-size beds and cable television and offer a tranquil night’s sleep to our patients.
What to Expect: Home Sleep Test
You may be eligible to take part in a sleep study at home rather than in our lab. An HST is a good way to diagnose sleep apnea. It does not diagnose other types of sleep disorders.
On the day of your home sleep test, you will visit one of our sleep labs to pick up a testing device and learn how to use it. You can pick up the device at our offices in Cary, Holly Springs and Raleigh. Our team will make sure you feel comfortable with using the device before you take it home for the night.
You will use the device overnight and bring it back the next morning. We will download the data and check that we’ve got all the information we need. If we’re missing some information, you may need to take the device home for another night.
In-Lab Sleep Study vs. Home Sleep Test
If you’re not sure which type of sleep study service is right for you, we can help.
- Home sleep tests are only able to diagnose sleep apnea. In-lab sleep studies can diagnose a wide range of sleep disorders.
- HST devices use three sensors to gather information about your sleep. In-lab sleep studies use more than 20 sensors to gather information such as brain wave activity, breathing effort and leg movements.
- HSTs do not offer audio and visual information about your sleep. In-lab studies allow our team to observe both audio and visual information that can help us make a diagnosis.
The cost of your sleep study or test may be covered by insurance and may vary for at-home and in-lab services. Check with your insurance company to learn about your coverage options.
How to Take Part in a Sleep Study
To take part in a sleep study or test, you need an order from your primary care provider or from a healthcare professional who specializes in the treatment of sleep disorders. If your provider is putting in an order, you can call 984-215-6980 to find out if it has been placed.
