Prostate Procedures

Cystoscopy Laser Enucleation of the Prostate

This is a procedure that involves removing prostate tissue which is causing blockage. This minimally invasive operation is performed on men who have an enlarged prostate and who are experiencing problems urinating.

During the surgery, a telescope is passed through the urethra and a laser is used to cut away the enlarged portions of the prostate tissue. The tissue is broken up by a morcellator and removed through the telescope. By removing the obstructed tissue, the capsule of the prostate remains intact, and the blockage is released which allows the patient to experience relief.

UroLift

This minimally invasive system opens up the blocked urethra by lifting or holding enlarged prostate tissue out of the way. There is no cutting, heating or removal of prostate tissue. The goal of treatment with the UroLift System is to relieve common side effects of other prostate treatments.

Heartburn Center

Our team at the REX Heartburn Center is here to help you stop heartburn and live a better quality of life.

Heartburn is common. An occasional episode is generally nothing to worry about. However, more than 60 million Americans suffer from heartburn regularly, even daily. Frequent and constant heartburn is the most common symptom of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

Hernia Repair

A hernia, occurs when the muscles in your abdomen weaken or tear. The risk of abdominal tissue or intestines pushing through the tear is may cause severe complications. As a result, it is important to pay attention to your symptoms and discuss them with your doctor. For larger, painful hernias, surgery may be a treatment option.

The best surgical option depends on the patient and type of hernia. Some can be repaired laparoscopically, while others require open surgery. UNC REX offers both treatment options and will work work with surgeons experienced in complex hernia repair.

Common types of hernias that are surgically treated include:

  • Inguinal (groin) hernias
  • Ventral or incisional hernias
  • Umbilical hernias
  • Hiatal hernias
  • Spigelian hernias
  • Incarcerated or strangulated hernias

Gallstone Surgery

The gallbladder is a small organ located in your upper right abdomen that aids in digestion. Gallbladder attacks are caused by the presence of gallstones in the gallbladder. Gallstones form when the liquid inside the gallbladder hardens into small, hard pieces. They can form for a number of reasons and can cause a painfully and potentially dangerous condition.

Frequent gallbladder attacks may be treated with surgery to remove the gallbladder through a procedure called cholecystectomy. The gallbladder is a nonessential organ and having it removed is a very common surgical procedure.

Most cholecystectomies can be performed laparoscopically, which is less invasive than open surgery and cuts down on recovery time.

Our team at North Carolina Surgery live and work in our community and are proud to be part of a practice that has been caring for our neighbors for over 70 years. Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery allows our surgeons to perform some procedures less invasively through the use of tools that can be inserted into very small incisions in the abdomen. Through the use of a small camera and long, narrow tools, a surgeon can view the surgical site on a monitor and manipulate tissue without having to perform an invasive procedure.

Not all procedures can be performed laparoscopically, but some common laparoscopic procedures are:

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal)
  • Laparoscopic appendectomy
  • Laparoscopic hernia repair
  • Laparoscopic colon removal
  • Laparoscopic splenectomy
  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy
  • Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication (reflux surgery)
  • SILS (single incision laparoscopic surgery)
