Triangle Business Journal honored two co-workers from UNC Health Rex in its annual Health Care Heroes awards: Orlando Reyes, director of Environmental Services, and Julie Aucoin, director of Nursing Practice, Research, Professional Development and Magnet Coordinator. (2021)

2020

UNC Health Rex’s N.C. Heart & Vascular Hospital was named to Fortune and IBM Watson Health’s 2021 list of the nation’s top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals. UNC Health Rex Healthcare was named one of the nation’s Top Hospitals for 2020 by The Leapfrog Group, an elite achievement based on the highest standards for quality and safety. Only 105 hospitals nationwide were chosen for this year’s award, out of more than 2,200 hospitals that were considered. UNC Health Rex was selected as one of 48 hospitals in the “Teaching Hospital” category. (2020)

UNC Health Rex is the only hospital in North Carolina – and one of only 29 hospitals nationwide – to be awarded an ‘A’ in every Leapfrog grading cycle since 2012. (2020)

UNC Health Rex achieved a five-star rating for quality of care from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). That puts UNC Health Rex in the top nine percent of hospitals nationwide. UNC Health Rex received its fourth consecutive Magnet Designation, the first for a hospital in the Triangle. The Magnet Recognition program affords important national recognition to healthcare organizations that demonstrate sustained excellence in nursing care. (2020)

UNC Health Rex was named to the US News and World Report’s Best Hospitals list which also included special recognition for receiving the top rating in all 10 procedures and conditions. This is an awesome accomplishment considering only 37 hospitals (less than 1%) in the country receive this recognition. (2020)

UNC Health Rex has been rated the #5 hospital in the state and #3 hospital in the Triangle in U.S. News & World Report's annual "Best Hospitals" report. (2020)

Two nurses, Joel Ray, UNC Health Rex's Chief Nursing Officer, and Kim Baker, team leader on 4 West were named to The Great 100 Nurses list. Nurses named to this prestigious list are recognized for demonstrating excellence in practice and a commitment to their profession. (2020)

HealthGrades named UNC Health Rex as one of America’s 100 best Hospitals for Specialty Care (2020)

Healthgrades Specialty Excellence Awards in Cardiac Surgery (2020, 2019, 2018), Joint Replacement (2020), Stroke Care (2020, 2019, 2018).

Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award -Top in the nation for overall patient experience based on nine measures related to doctor and nurse communication, hospital cleanliness and noise levels, and medication and post-discharge care instructions (2020, 2019)

The Triangle Business Journal honored local Healthcare Heroes including Logan Jones and April Lalumiere both from UNC Health Rex for their outstanding contributions in healthcare. (2020)

Dr. Omar Kass-Hout, MD, and Dr. Tibor Becske, MD, recently completed the first "Comaneci Assisted Coiling" procedure in North Carolina at UNC Health Rex. A Comaneci device was used to assist with a previously ruptured brain aneurysm embolization. The device is a new technology that functions as a temporary stent that can maintain coils in place while coiling, but can be removed at the end of the procedure to eliminate the long term need for blood thinners. It is named after the famous Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci, in an attempt to reflect its flexibility and adaptive nature to the vessels. (2020)

Last month, UNC Health Rex received its three year Chest Pain Center accreditation from the American Association of Cardiology. This distinction demonstrates our heart and vascular team’s commitment to a quality improvement program focused on the efficient and effective care of acute coronary syndrome patients. (2020)

UNC Health Rex has been a Joint Commission approved Stroke Center since 2011

2019

UNC REX Celebrates 125 years in Raleigh (2019)

WRAL awarded UNC REX Best Hospital by the Voters’ Choice Awards. (2018 and 2019) WRAL Voters’ Choice Awards return in September

UNC Rex received a score of 100 and was designated a Leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality by the National LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Index Human Rights Campaign Foundation. (2019) (will receive again in 2020 but has not been announced yet)

UNC REX received national recognition from the American Heart Association as a Gold Plus STEMI Receiving and Silver NSTEMI recognition in its Mission: Lifeline program for improving patient care and outcomes for heart attack patients. (2019)

Sandra Waugaman was name to The Great 100 Nurses list. (2019)

The National Research Corporation (NRC) has named UNC REX Healthcare a Consumer Choice Award winner every year from 2004 – 2019.

UNC REX Healthcare is the first hospital in Wake County to receive a new Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation, which recognizes excellent care provided for older adults. UNC REX earned a Level 3 “Bronze” accreditation from the American College of Emergency Physicians. (2019)

Forbes ranked UNC REX as #12 on its Top 20 Best Employers in North Carolina. (2019)

UNC REX was listed as #7 on the U.S. News & World Report. Regional Best Hospitals list and was rated high performing in 9 adult procedures and conditions (2019). UNC Health Care is also consistently nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report. (2019)

2018

UNC REX Hospitals was honored as one of the 100 great hospitals in America by Becker’s Hospital Review. (2018)

NC Heart & Vascular Hospital at UNC REX awarded the City of Raleigh Sir Walter Raleigh Award, TBJ Space Award and Associated Builders & Contractors of the Carolinas Eagle Award. (2018)

Received the 2018 Get With The Guidelines Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association for outstanding commitment to high-quality stroke care using the latest scientific evidence. (2018)

Downtown Raleigh Alliance named the NC Heart & Vascular Hospital its Development Project of the Year. (2018)

Wake Technical Community College Foundation honored UNC REX as its Corporate Benefactor of the Year. (2018)

UNC REX awarded BCBSNC Blue Distinction Specialty Care designation for bariatric surgery, cardiac care, knee & hip replacement, spine surgery and maternity care. (2018)

Earned a CareChex Quality Award for #1 in N.C. for Medical Excellence. Also ranked #1 Hospital in the state for Medical Excellence in Hip Fracture Repair. (2018)

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Home Health Care Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HHCAHPS) survey star ratings, which measures patients’ experiences with home health agencies, awarded Rex Nursing and Rehabilitation Care Center of Raleigh and Apex a Five-Star rating for overall quality. Four nurses, Lisa Lee, MSN, Martha Fish, MSN, Tracy Hall, BSN and Dana Garcia, were named to The Great 100 Nurses list. Nurses named to this prestigious list are recognized for demonstrating excellence in practice and a commitment to their profession. (2018)

The Triangle Business Journal honored local Healthcare Heroes including former President of UNC Health Care William Roper, MD with the Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as President of UNC Health Care Wesley Burks, MD, for their outstanding contributions in healthcare. (2018)

Chris Morris named National Child Safety Technician of the Year and UNC REX was named the Checking Station of the Year – Non-permanent. (2018)

2017

HealthGrades awarded UNC REX the Outstanding Patient Experience Award for the third consecutive time, placing the hospital among the top 15% of hospitals in the U.S. (2017)

Additional recognition by HealthGrades for the Cranial Neurosurgery Excellence Award and Joint Replacement Excellence Award were bestowed to UNC REX for three consecutive years and the Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award for two consecutive years. (2017)

Strategic Healthcare Partners (SHP) awarded Rex Home Services the SHP Best Superior Performer award for ranking in the top 20% in the SHP national HHCAHPS survey benchmark for overall satisfaction as measured from the patient's point of view. (2017)

The Great 100

The Great 100 is a grassroots, peer recognition program that honors the nursing profession in North Carolina.

The Great 100 recognizes the importance of Registered Nurses in diverse practice settings and their impact on nursing.
