REX Blood Services to Hold ‘Save Our Summer’ Blood Drive on Friday, June 23
All blood types needed as donations decline during traditionally slower summer months
REX Blood Services will host its 12th annual Save Our Summer Blood Drive on Friday, June 23, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the REX Donor Center. The 12-hour blood drive is open to the community. Donors will receive free food from local restaurants including Chef Mario’s Catering and Personal Chef, Daylight Donuts, McDonald’s, Backyard Bistro, Jasmin Mediterranean Bistro, On the Border, The Oak, Side Street Restaurant, Qdoba Mexican Eats, Pieology, McAlister’s Deli, Outback Steakhouse, Milton’s Pizza and Pasta, and Firebirds. Donors will also receive a free “Save Our Summer” T-shirt.
This time of year, blood donations typically decline. Schools are out, graduations have wrapped up and vacations have begun. At the same time, the need for blood remains steady or increases. About 41,000 units are needed every day in the U.S. for surgery, cancer and other patients, according to the American Association of Blood Banks. All blood types are needed, especially O Postive and O Negative.
“We are so grateful for blood donors and the vital role they play in our communities,” said Emilie Sanders-Watson, a donor services coordinator with REX Blood Services. “Our annual ‘Save Our Summer’ blood drive is a fun way to kick off summer, and remind us that our family, friends and neighbors still need us very much.”
WHO: Blood donors must be at least 17 years of age, in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds. For information on donor requirements or to make an appointment, call (919) 784-4750 or visit www.rexhealth.com/blood.
