REX Healthcare Foundation Named Web.com Tour’s 2017 Charity of the Year

Raleigh’s premiere golf tournament wins national recognition for three decades of charitable efforts

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, F.L. – Dec. 12, 2017 – The REX Healthcare Foundation, the main charitable beneficiary of the Web.com Tour’s Rex Hospital Open, was named the Tour’s “Charity of the Year” at the PGA TOUR’s Tournament Meetings on Thursday, December 7 in Boca Raton, FL.

As part of its third annual Charity of the Year Award, the Web.com Tour has donated $30,000 to the REX Healthcare Foundation in honor of three decades of outreach and impact.

“With charity serving as the backbone of the Web.com Tour, there is no honor more prestigious than the Charity of the Year Award,” said Web.com Tour President Dan Glod. “The REX Healthcare Foundation, in conjunction with the Rex Hospital Open, has strengthened their community by supporting programs and services that make a positive impact on patients’ lives.”

In 2017, the REX Hospital Open contributed an all-time high of $470,000 to the REX Healthcare Foundation. This past year also marked a milestone anniversary for the REX Hospital Open – 30 years of charity golf. In that time, more than $8.4 million in net proceeds have been raised to support the Triangle, N.C., community.

“We are proud the Web.com Tour recognized the REX Healthcare Foundation’s efforts to provide much-needed care and services in our community,” said Sylvia Hackett, vice president of the REX Healthcare Foundation. “Thanks to the generous support of enthusiastic volunteers and philanthropic business leaders who support this professional tournament, the REX Hospital Open is a key component of the Foundation’s work.”

Highlights from the REX Healthcare Foundation’s 2017 community support include:

  • 400 critically ill babies are nurtured in specialized incubators that Foundation funds helped purchase
  • 15 families with children are comforted when a parent faces serious illness through the donor-supported KidsCan! program
  • 2,000 women in need receive free screening mammograms and diagnostic tests
  • 35 nurses receive scholarships to pursue certification or advanced training
  • 200+ patients receive bus fare to get to treatment
  • 400+ cancer patients receive help through the Angel Fund
  • 778 patients undergoing financial hardship will receive aid from the Patient Assistance Fund

Over the years, the REX Healthcare Foundation has implemented a number of impactful programs and initiatives thanks to REX Hospital Open proceeds including cancer and heart disease awareness/education and early detection programs, a Mobile Mammography Unit, a state-of-the-art Critical Care Transport, and, most recently, the new NC Heart & Vascular Hospital on the main UNC REX campus. Countless people continue to be positively impacted through these programs and lives are saved thanks to the partnership between the REX Hospital Open and the REX Healthcare Foundation.

The REX Hospital Open returns to TPC Wakefield Plantation, a McConnell Golf Course, in Raleigh, May 28-June 3, 2018.
