UNC REX Healthcare Earns Top Five-Star Rating from CMS’ Hospital Compare Website

Five-star rating places UNC REX among top 9.1 percent of hospitals in the U.S.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Dec. 28, 2017 – UNC REX Healthcare has received a top five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, placing UNC REX among the top 9.1 percent of hospitals nationwide. CMS analyzes hospitals using data on outcomes, patient experience and other factors for its Hospital Compare online database to give patients and their families another tool to make informed health care choices.

UNC REX is one of only 337 hospitals nationwide, and the only hospital in the Triangle, to receive a five-star rating from CMS.

“This recognition is a direct result of the work our co-workers and physicians do each and every day,” said Steve Burriss, president of UNC REX. “We are committed to providing all of our patients and their families the highest quality care and service.”

CMS began providing star ratings for hospitals in 2016 to help consumers make more informed decisions about where to access health care. The ratings use broad categories of information, including outcomes, patient experience, access and process to determine how well hospitals perform. The overall rating includes 57 of the more than 100 measures reported on Hospital Compare, divided into seven measure groups: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging.

This national CMS five-star recognition comes on the heels of UNC REX’s most recent “A” safety grade from Leapfrog, a national nonprofit organization. UNC REX is the only hospital in North Carolina to receive straight “A” grades since Leapfrog began its safety report card in 2012.
