Joey Garber Edges Out Competition to Win the 2018 REX Hospital Open at TPC Wakefield

With a score of 18-under par, Garber won the Web.com TOUR event by one stroke

2018 REX Open Winner Joey GarberRALEIGH, N.C. – Joey Garber won the 2018 REX Hospital Open on a sunny Sunday afternoon at TPC Wakefield, shooting 18-under par to take home the trophy for the Web.com TOUR event.

Garber, 26, is a native of Petoskey, Mich., and played college golf at the University of Georgia. Garber finished the four-day Rex Hospital Open with a score of 266, or 18-under par. He topped Hank Lebioda and Scott Langley, who tied for second with 17-under par.

“I feel very humbled to win this tournament,” Garber said. “On Tuesday morning, I got to visit some inspiring patients at UN C REX, in the heart hospital. They instilled in me what it means to be positive and persevere. That’s what I tried to do this week.”

The victory gave Garber a $117,000 top prize and moves him closer to securing his PGA TOUR card. The top 25 money leaders on the Web.com TOUR earn a chance to play on the PGA TOUR.

The REX Hospital Open is the Triangle’s premiere charity golf tournament, and hosted more than 150 professional golfers from around the world this week. Albin Choi, who played at N.C. State, and Cameron Percy, who lives at TPC Wakefield in Raleigh, tied for sixth place at 15-under par.

“This year’s REX Hospital Open was one for the books,” said Steve Burriss, president of UNC REX Healthcare. “We are thrilled by the turnout and the overwhelming support for a great cause. We also offer our sincere congratulations to this year’s winner, Joey Garber, and all of those who competed.”

The 2018 REX Hospital Open was a huge success – and offering family-friendly fun for spectators and golfers all week long. The event kicked off with the annual REX Hospital Open Pro-Am and continued with delicious food trucks and live music on the Fan Fairway Pavilion Stage presented by the Carolina Hurricanes. Not only did the event wrap with an exciting win by Joey Garber, but attendees also came together for Sunday’s Service Appreciation Day sponsored by First Citizens Bank.

Rex charity golf has raised more than $9 million for patients in need over the past 31 years. Funds raised this year will support Neuroscience service line expansion at UNC REX Healthcare, which will help patients get the specialized care they require when confronted with stroke, aneurysms and other neurological diseases.
