UNC REX Healthcare Congratulates the REX Healthcare Guild on its Raleigh Hall of Fame Induction

Guild volunteers to be inducted at ceremony on Nov. 4 for ‘service to the people of Raleigh'

RALEIGH, N.C. – Nov. 1, 2018 – The UNC REX Healthcare family is proud to congratulate the REX Healthcare Guild for its induction into the 2018 Raleigh Hall of Fame. Since it was established in 1936, the Guild has evolved into a group of dedicated and passionate volunteers who continue to embrace its original mission “to assist Rex Hospital in becoming an instrument of greater service to the people of Raleigh.”

“The Guild has been an instrumental partner to UNC REX and this community for more than 80 years,” said Steve Burriss, president of UNC REX. “They are trailblazers in answering the call when there’s a need. They are so deserving of this huge honor of being inducted into the Raleigh Hall of Fame.”

The Guild has grown from a small group of physicians’ wives into a team of 30 women from all walks of life who work with more than 1,400 volunteers across the UNC REX system. The Guild also provides financial support for a wide range of projects and medical equipment that have improved patient care, including buying newborn screening and 3D mammography equipment, starting a Palliative Care program, helping patients paying for prescriptions, and more.

Last year, the Guild helped open a second gift shop at UNC REX, First Uniform Shop Gifts, in the N.C. Heart & Vascular Hospital. Proceeds from the two UNC REX gift shops enable the Guild to support more projects that benefit patients and co-workers.

“Since the Guild formed, it has helped patients with their medical bills, served meals to needy families, donated money for expensive state-of-the-art medical equipment, and beautified the hospital and grounds to create a recuperative environment for patients and their families,” the Raleigh Hall of Fame wrote in its induction summary.

The holidays will be an especially busy time for the Guild. Every year, the Guild distributes poinsettias throughout the hospital, holds a holiday appreciation tea for all co-workers, and hand-delivers teddy bears to every patient in the hospital on the morning of Christmas Eve.

“Over the years, the patients, families and staff at UNC REX have felt the generosity of the Guild,” said Bonnie Woodruff, president of the REX Healthcare Guild. “We are the heart of the hospital and love giving back to the community. We appreciate this recognition from the Raleigh Hall of Fame.”

The REX Healthcare Guild is one of the 2018 inductees into the Raleigh Hall of Fame, which recognizes individuals and organizations that have made a lasting impact in the community. The inductees will be honored at a ceremony on Nov. 4 at the Raleigh Convention Center. Learn more about the Raleigh Hall of Fame here.
