REX, UNC Health Care Hospitals Receive Top Safety Scores from Leapfrog Group

UNC Medical Center, UNC REX, Johnston Health, High Point and UNC Rockingham earn “A” grades for safety

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – April 24, 2018 – Five hospitals affiliated with UNC Health Care earned top “A” grades in the latest set of patient safety scores from the Leapfrog Group, a nationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to improving health care quality.

UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, UNC REX Healthcare in Raleigh, Johnston Health in Smithfield and Clayton, High Point Regional in High Point and UNC Rockingham in Eden all received top marks on Leapfrog’s Spring 2018 report card.

“We are proud to provide safe and excellent care for all patients across UNC Health Care, and appreciate the Leapfrog recognition,” said Dr. Bill Roper, CEO of UNC Health Care. “We strive to constantly improve, and are committed to finding innovative ways to deliver the best care while reducing costs.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to approximately 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is peer reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Nationwide, 750 hospitals received “A” grades on Leapfrog’s Spring 2018 report card.

UNC REX is the only hospital in North Carolina – and one of only 49 nationwide – to receive straight A’s since Leapfrog began publishing its safety report card in 2012.

“This is the only national rating of how well hospitals protect patients from preventable harm and death, such as medical errors, infections, and injuries,” said Leah Binder, CEO of Leapfrog. “Receiving an ‘A’ Safety Grade means a hospital is among the best in the country for preventing these terrible problems and putting their patients first, 24 hours a day.”
