Sebastian Cappelen Wins 2019 REX Hospital Open at The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation

RALEIGH, N.C. – Sebastian Cappelen won the 2019 REX Hospital Open on Sunday, shooting a course record 21-under par to win by three shots.

Cappelen shot a 7-under 64 in the final round and birdied three of his last four holes for a victory over Raleigh native Grayson Murray, who tied for second with Zack Sucher. It’s the first Web.com Tour win for the 29-year-old from Denmark since 2014. Cappelen played college golf at the University of Arkansas.

The REX Hospital Open, is the Triangle’s premiere charity golf tournament and the only North Carolina stop for the Web.com Tour. The tournament this year hosted more than 156 professional golfers from around the world and helped raise money for the new UNC REX Cancer Center.

“It’s special playing here in Raleigh, and great being a part of this event and helping raise money for the new cancer center,” Cappelen said. “I want to thank UNC REX Hospital for this amazing event.”

Murray, who was born at UNC REX Hospital and grew up in Raleigh, was on fire Sunday, shooting a 10-under-par 61 to tie for second at 18-under 266.

“This year’s REX Hospital Open was a huge success,” said Steve Burriss, president of UNC REX Healthcare. “We cannot thank the participants, sponsors and spectators enough for their overwhelming support and contributions that allow us to continue important work at UNC REX. We offer our congratulations to this year’s winner, Sebastian Cappelen, and to everyone who competed.”

The 2019 REX Hospital Open attracted great crowds and offered family-friendly fun for spectators and golfers all week long. The event kicked off with the annual REX Hospital Open Pro-Am and continued with food trucks and live music on the Fan Fairway Pavilion Stage presented by the Carolina Hurricanes. The tournament featured four exiting days of golf, culminating with Sunday’s Service Appreciation Day sponsored by First Citizens Bank.

As the Triangle’s premier charity golf event, the REX Hospital Open has raised more than $9 million for patients in need over the past 32 years. Funds raised this year will support the new UNC REX Cancer Center, which is currently under construction across from the main hospital campus. This expansion will improve access to critical oncology care for generations of patients across Eastern North Carolina.
