leapgrog logoCHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Nov. 7, 2019 – Several hospitals affiliated with UNC Health Care received top “A” grades from the Leapfrog Group on its Fall 2019 patient safety report card, including UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, UNC REX Healthcare in Raleigh, Johnston Health in Smithfield and Wayne UNC Health in Goldsboro.

The grades reinforce the hospitals’ ongoing commitment to constantly improving patient safety and delivering compassionate care.

“We’re proud of the safe care that our co-workers and physicians provide every day to patients from across North Carolina,” said Dr. Wesley Burks, CEO of UNC Health Care. “We know that patients and their families look to national ratings organizations like Leapfrog when they make decisions about where their loved ones will receive care. We appreciate Leapfrog for recognizing our hospitals.”

UNC REX is the only hospital in North Carolina – and one of only 36 hospitals nationwide – to receive straight As since Leapfrog began grading hospitals for safety in 2012.

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization driven by employers and other purchasers of health care committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to all general hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.

Developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.
