UNC REX Healthcare Earns Advanced Thrombectomy Stroke Center Certification

Stroke patients at UNC REX receive specialized treatment and care 24/7

RALEIGH, N.C. – Oct. 10, 2019 – UNC REX Healthcare recently received Advanced Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center certification from The Joint Commission, an independent, nonprofit organization that accredits health care organizations and programs across the country.

The certification recognizes UNC REX for providing critical care for stroke patients that meets the exacting standards of The Joint Commission. UNC REX physicians perform specialized surgery to remove blood clots from patients’ brains during a stroke – a procedure known as Endovascular Thrombectomy – 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The procedure involves placing a catheter into the brain and removing the clot that is causing the stroke. Removing blood clots from the brain leads to better outcomes for stroke patients, including greater independence and mobility.

“This certification is recognition of our commitment to improving the lives of our patients,” said Dr. Sean Tehrani, vice president of Neuroscience for UNC REX. “Many patients with potentially devastating strokes have gone directly home or to a rehab facility. It is with great pride that we watch those patients return to their normal lives.”

Stroke affects not only patients but the whole family. It can mean loss of livelihood for working people and change of lifestyle for spouses and children. It can mean loss of independence. Rapid treatments can dramatically reduce the disability from a stroke.

Stroke patients arriving at UNC REX receive the most advanced stroke care, both clot retrieval for ischemic stroke and neuroendovascular surgery for aneurysmal hemorrhages:

  • UNC REX neurologists and neuro-radiologists ensure that all patients receive rapid evaluation and imaging to identify treatable strokes.
  • Neuro-intensive care and dedicated stroke units have nurses specially trained to take care of patients with neurologic conditions.
  • Rehabilitation therapists and care managers assist patients in their plans for recovery and return to our community.
