UNC REX Healthcare Celebrates ‘Topping Out’ Milestone for new Cancer Center

New UNC REX Cancer Center scheduled to open in late 2021, will treat thousands of patients a year

RALEIGH, N.C.
– Oct. 22, 2020 – UNC REX Healthcare recently celebrated a major milestone in the construction of the new UNC REX Cancer Center by holding a traditional “topping out” ceremony.

During construction, topping out is a builders’ tradition held when the last beam is placed atop a structure.

The UNC REX Cancer Center is a four-story, 145,000 square-foot building that is scheduled to open in late 2021. It will be located across the street from the main UNC REX Hospital Raleigh campus, at the corner of Blue Ridge and Macon Pond Roads. The Center is the latest addition to Raleigh’s blossoming Blue Ridge Corridor.

“We are excited to see this important project coming along, and look forward to the day we welcome our first patients and their families,” said Dr. Susan Moore, an oncologist and President of UNC REX Physicians. “This Cancer Center will help us improve oncology care by providing a better experience to our patients along with compassionate, high quality care UNC Rex Cancer Care is known for.”

UNC REX’s partners on the construction project include Brasfield & Gorrie, BSA Life Sciences, Holt Brothers Construction and LL Vann Electric.

UNC REX treats thousands of cancer patients every year, and demand is expected to continue to increase with this region’s aging and growing population, and improvements in detection and treatment.

The UNC REX Cancer Center was designed with input from patients and their families, physicians, nurses and others. New services offered will include an Oncology Urgent Care clinic and a “Quality of Life Clinic” with a variety of support services for cancer patients, including behavioral health care, palliative care, massage therapy, holistic treatment and more. New infusion areas will be designed to support patients and their families.

The new location also will allow easy access, and ample/free parking. For more information about cancer care at UNC REX, visit www.rexhealth.com/cancer.
