UNC Rex Healthcare Earns 2021 Leapfrog Top Hospital Award for Quality and Safety

UNC Rex recognized as one of the nation’s top teaching hospitals in Leapfrog ranking

RALEIGH, N.C. – Dec. 7, 2021 – UNC Rex Healthcare has been named one of the nation’s Top Hospitals for 2021 by The Leapfrog Group, an honor that recognizes UNC Rex’s commitment to the highest standards for patient quality and safety.

Announced today, the Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive awards hospitals can receive. Only 149 hospitals nationwide were selected this year, out of more than 2,200 hospitals that were considered. UNC Rex was recognized in the Top Teaching Hospital category.

“We are so proud of our teammates and physicians for their commitment to clinical quality and patient safety.  Their hard work earned this national recognition for UNC Rex,” said Ernie Bovio, president of UNC Rex. “There is no question that the past two years has created new challenges for all hospitals, but we continue to provide the excellent care that all of our patients and their families expect.”

The Leapfrog Group considered the quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, surgery, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication and other errors.

“We are pleased to recognize UNC Rex as a Top Hospital this year,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Even with the continued strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, UNC Rex has demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to excellent health care for patients in Wake County and beyond. We congratulate the board, leadership, staff and clinicians who put their patients first.”

UNC Rex has evolved from a community hospital serving mostly Raleigh and surrounding communities into a top regional medical center providing specialized care for patients from across Eastern North Carolina. UNC Rex’s education initiatives include cardiology, vascular and urogynecology fellows; medical students who work with the Hospitalist team; and students studying nursing, pharmacy, radiology, EMT and more.

Leapfrog is a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers focused on health care safety and quality, and is known for its hospital safety grades. Since Leapfrog began grading hospitals in 2012, UNC Rex is the only hospital in North Carolina – and one of only 23 nationwide – to receive straight A’s every year.

To qualify for the Leapfrog Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. To see the full list of institutions honored as 2021 Top Hospitals, visit www.leapfroggroup.org/tophospitals.
