UNC Rex Healthcare to Open New Holly Springs Hospital on Nov. 1

The hospital opening was postponed during pandemic surge, but is preparing for patients

RALEIGH, N.C. – Oct. 19, 2021

UNC Rex Healthcare is preparing to open its new Holly Springs Hospital on Nov. 1. The opening had been postponed in September because of the surge in COVID cases.

By pushing back the opening, UNC Rex was able to redeploy existing employees and new hires to its main Raleigh hospital, to support the care of COVID and non-COVID patients. However, the number of COVID patients hospitalized has declined, allowing UNC Rex to move ahead with opening the Holly Springs Hospital.

“We are excited to open our new hospital and begin caring for patients in Southwestern Wake County and beyond,” said Roy Tempke, chief operating officer of the new Holly Springs Hospital. “We appreciate all the community support during these challenging times and look forward to providing excellent medical care at this hospital for generations to come.”

The UNC Health Rex Holly Springs Hospital will offer much-needed medical care and services to all residents of one of the Triangle’s fastest-growing regions, closer to home. UNC Rex began efforts more than a decade ago to expand medical care in that area, which continues to attract new residents, from young families to retirees.

The 242,000 square-foot, eight-story community hospital will include 50 inpatient beds, operating rooms for a wide range of surgeries, a full-service Emergency Department, MRI, radiology, laboratory, pharmacy and much more. The hospital will deliver babies with seven labor and delivery rooms, a C-section operating suite and OB Emergency bays.

Eventually, the hospital will employ more than 400 people. When it opens on Nov. 1, the hospital will have about 300 employees. About 40 percent of those will transfer from UNC Rex’s Raleigh campus. Many of the newly hired employees have worked at the Raleigh campus for the past few months to support the hospital during the latest COVID surge. The postponed opening also gave the new employees extended training time.

The new hospital is located at the corner of Avent Ferry Road & Highway 55 adjacent to the REX Healthcare of Holly Springs campus. For more information, visit www.rexhealth.com/hollysprings.
