New UNC Rex Cancer Center to Open for Patients on March 1

Center will offer oncology care and support for thousands of patients a year

RALEIGH, N.C. – Feb. 28, 2022 – The UNC Rex Cancer Center will open on March 1, providing a new home for the region’s top oncology care.

The four-story, 144,000 square-foot building is located at 2901 Blue Ridge Road, at the corner of Blue Ridge and the recently named Hopeful Drive, just across the street from UNC Rex’s main Raleigh campus.

The UNC Rex Cancer Center was designed to provide the latest cancer treatment and services for thousands of patients every year. The center will house oncology services that were provided in older, cramped space in the main UNC Rex hospital and medical office buildings near the main hospital.

“This new Cancer Center will help us fulfill our mission to provide excellent care for all of our patients and their families for generations to come,” said UNC Rex president Ernie Bovio. “We are proud of the teams that worked together to make this facility a reality.”

The UNC Rex Cancer Center was designed with input from patients and their families, physicians, nurses and others. New services offered will include a “Quality of Life Clinic” with a variety of support services for cancer patients, including behavioral health care, palliative care, rehab services, holistic treatment and more.

New infusion areas were designed to support patients and their families with brighter and bigger space. New radiation treatment equipment is the most technologically advanced available. Artwork donated by Raleigh patrons of art and supporters of The Rex Healthcare Foundation, including two beautiful murals, help create a healing environment.

The new location also will allow easy access, and ample/free parking. UNC Rex sees thousands of oncology patients every year. Demand is expected to continue to increase with this region’s aging and growing population, and with improvements in detection and treatment.

“We are excited to welcome patients and their families to this beautiful new Cancer Center,” said Dr. Susan Moore, an oncologist and President of UNC Rex Physicians. “We strive to constantly improve the care we provide, and this facility will allow us to offer a better experience for our patients.”

UNC REX’s partners on the construction project include BSA LifeStructures, Brasfield & Gorrie and Holt Brothers Construction.
