UNC Health Hospitals Earn Top Grades from Leapfrog Group for Safety

Multiple UNC Health hospitals recognized with ‘As’ by Leapfrog in its Spring 2024 report

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – May 1, 2024 – Multiple UNC Health hospitals have received top “A” grades for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group on its Spring 2024 hospital report card.

UNC Health Rex in Raleigh and Holly Springs, UNC Health Nash in Rocky Mount, UNC Health Pardee in Hendersonville and UNC Health Wayne in Goldsboro all earned “As” from Leapfrog in its latest report, released today.

“Across UNC Health, we focus on providing safe and excellent care to all patients,” said Dr. Wesley Burks, CEO of UNC Health. “In addition, we look at measurements like Leapfrog to help us constantly improve.”

UNC Health Rex in Raleigh continues to hold the distinction as the only hospital in North Carolina to earn straight “As” since Leapfrog began grading hospitals in 2012. Rex one of only 15 hospitals nationwide with this honor.

“Rex teammates, clinical providers and physicians work together to provide safe and high-quality care for patients,” said Kirsten Riggs, interim president and chief operating officer at UNC Health Rex. “We’re proud to be North Carolina’s only straight-A hospital and among an elite group of 15 hospitals across the nation to receive this recognition.”

Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade twice a year to nearly 3,000 general hospitals across the country based on more than 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

“Everyone who works at UNC Health should be proud of these ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grades,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It takes complete dedication of at every level, and an ironclad commitment to putting patients first. I thank UNC Health, its leadership, clinicians, staff, and volunteers for caring so deeply for its patients and their safety.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program focused exclusively on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day nationally. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
