Magnet Recognized. American Nurses Credentialing Center

Magnet Recognition

UNC Health Rex is proud to be the first hospital in the Triangle to be awarded Magnet status. The organization’s first designation was received in 2006.  UNC Health Rex was re-designated as a Magnet hospital for the fourth consecutive time in 2021. This award puts UNC Health Rex in an elite group of the top 2 percent of hospitals in the nation. Additionally, UNC Health Rex is one of seven hospitals in the country with Magnet® designation, CMS 5 Star rating and a Leapfrog “A” safety grade (which the organization has received every grading cycle since 2012).

The Magnet Recognition program affords important national recognition to healthcare organizations that demonstrate sustained excellence in nursing care. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the nation's largest and foremost nursing accrediting and credentialing organization, administers this prestigious program.

The characteristics that distinguish UNC Health Rex as a Magnet Organization are:

  • Quality of nursing leadership
  • Organizational structure
  • Quality of care
  • Autonomy
  • Professional development
  • RN to RN relationships
  • Interprofessional relationships

During the 2021 re-designation process, Magnet appraisers highlighted the interprofessional relationships within UNC Health Rex, applauding the great collaboration among nurses, physicians, pharmacists, therapists and all other support disciplines.

They shared, “Even in a pandemic, UNC Health Rex nurses demonstrate their professional practice model in everything they do, engage with one another supportively, and provide excellent care of their patients.”

Hosting this appraisal during the COVID-19 pandemic allowed UNC Health Rex nurses to reflect upon all of their good work and contributions during a particularly stressful time.  We are grateful that we could conduct the visit virtually and include so many members of our staff. Thanks to the virtual format, the appraisers were able to spend more time with the nursing teamspeaking with approximately 400 nurses in just three days.
