Diagnosis and Treatment
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. When caught early and confined to the breast, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99 percent.
That’s why it’s important to detect breast cancer as early as possible through regular self-breast exams and mammograms.
Women should begin getting annual mammograms at age 40. If you have a history of breast cancer in your family, talk to your doctor about getting screened earlier. The REX Breast Care Center offers several tests, including digital and 3D mammography, to help diagnose cancer.
The UNC REX Comprehensive Breast Care Program offers several tests and treatments:
- Breast-conservation therapy
- Clinical breast exams

- Mastectomy with coordinated simultaneous breast reconstruction
