While imaging methods like X-ray, CT and MRI provide information about the body's anatomy, PET and SPECT CT provide information about the body's biological activities.

Certain "hybrid" imaging systems have been developed to acquire anatomical and biological information in one study. This technology helps UNC REX physicians diagnose and treat disease sooner, because biological processes associated with disease may be happening before they are visible through changes in anatomy.

With earlier and more accurate diagnosis, physicians can plan treatment more effectively, provide feedback on treatment effectiveness, help to avoid unnecessary invasive surgery and reduce the risks of unnecessary surgery.
