The UNC Health Rex Hospitalist team embodies a high-performing medical practice, working collaboratively to improve patient outcomes and experience while working with an increasingly complex healthcare environment.
The Hospitalists provide comprehensive, high-quality, and compassionate care for a variety of medical and surgical patients at UNC Health Rex. This includes admitting, rounding on, consulting and discharging general medicine and sub-specialty patients in close collaboration with consultants.
The Hospitalists see patients in all areas of the hospital, including a limited number of ICU patients. In addition, our team enjoys 24/7 intensivist and procedural support. We also have a well-integrated advance practice provider program. Our Hospitalist team also includes physician assistants and nurse practitioners who admit, consult, discharge and cross cover on our patients at night.
Hospitalist-Led Quality Initiatives
The Hospitalists are leading various initiatives to improve clinical quality and efficiency across the hospital. Some areas of interest include medication reconciliation, ED throughput, telemetry utilization, documentation, and patient satisfaction. The team is also involved in projects that span across multiple clinical areas including pneumonia, sepsis, and COPD. The Hospitalist group also has an optional teaching service ideal for those who enjoy working with medical students or residents.
Leadership Opportunities
Members of the UNC Health Rex Hospitalist team hold key positions on multiple hospital committees, including pharmacy and therapeutics, ethics, performance improvement, health information management, IT, antimicrobial use, cancer care, disaster preparedness and utilization management.
Additionally, they also hold leadership positions on the medical executive committee, the department of medicine and case management. This allows the team to represent our patients’ best interests across the critical functions of the health system. Many physicians also have part time roles serving as physician advisers and working with clinical documentation specialists.
Program Features
We are one of the oldest Hospitalist programs in the area, established approximately 20 years ago, with very little turnover. Our goal is to expand the program in response to our growing patient volumes. Some key features of our program include:
- Flexible scheduling (not 7 on/7 off)
- Staggered rounding and admitting shifts
- Up to four MDs on at night with a PA/NP to handle cross cover pages
- 24/7 intensivist and critical response team coverage
- No procedures
- Excellent sub-specialty support
