PGY1/PGY2/MS - Health System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership Residency

PGY1/PGY2/MS Health System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership Pharmacy Residency Program Purpose Statement

PGY1 Purpose

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

PGY2 Purpose

PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

Areas of competency emphasized during the program include safe and effective medication-use systems, quality assurance, the management of human resources, the management of financial resources, use of technology, and advanced leadership. The residency lays the foundation for continued growth in management and leadership skills with the expectation that with fifteen years of successful pharmacy administration practice, the residency graduate should be ready to assume directorship of a large hospital or health system pharmacy. Upon graduation, residents are prepared for a clinical or operational management/supervisory role in a variety of work settings including small to mid-size hospitals, large health systems, and pharmacy benefit management organizations.

UNC Health Rex’s combined Master’s degree and 24 month residency in Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership is designed to create graduates that can immediately assume manager level or higher leadership positions.

Program Description

Year One

The first year of the program will closely follow the strong clinical training of our PGY1 pharmacy practice residency program.  Clinical training will be emphasized in a variety of patient care areas including internal medicine, critical care, oncology, antimicrobial stewardship, cardiology, emergency medicine and administration.  Throughout the year there will be two to three administration experiences with our managers.  The first year will prepare the resident to successfully complete the BCPS exam to demonstrate knowledge and expertise in clinical pharmacy.

Year Two

The second year builds on the success of the first year and exposes the resident to experiences with managers, directors and the executive director for the Triangle East Region.  Financial, medication safety, operations and clinical leadership rotations are offered.  Human Resources experiences will be provided.

Concurrent Programmatic Opportunities

During both residency years, the resident will be enrolled in a Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a specialization in Health-System Pharmacy Administration curriculum at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.  The resident will have dedicated time during the week to attend classes.

Additionally the resident in each class will take a leadership role in the DOSE (Drug Optimization and Savings Enhancement) program.
