Frequently Asked Questions

How long will I be at the facility for the procedure?

You will be at the endoscopy center for a total of 2-3 hours.

Must I have a driver? Can’t I just get a cab or wait a few hours after the test before I drive home?

Endoscopies are sedated procedures. You must have a licensed driver to take you home or the procedure will be cancelled. Only medical transportation services are acceptable.

Does my driver have to stay at the facility the whole time I’m there?

Yes. The procedures can vary in length; therefore it is required that your driver stay at the facility so he or she is present when you are ready to be discharged.

Can I work the day after my procedure?

Yes. Your doctor will advise you after the procedure if there are any restrictions you must observe.

How should I expect to feel after my procedure?

Most people have very little discomfort after an endoscopic procedure. If you have a colonoscopy, the most common symptoms are gas, bloating and mild cramping. If you have an upper endoscopy, you may experience a slight sore throat, mild chest tenderness, or a vague sensation of a “lump” in your throat. Though these do not usually occur, they are normal and can last for a few days after the procedure.

How long will it be before I receive the results of my biopsy?

Although it usually takes 3-5 business days for the biopsy results to come back, it may take up to 14 days to receive a call or letter with the results.

What should I do if I think I have a problem after the procedure?

If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please call 911. Otherwise, you can call the office at (919) 791-2040. If it is during business hours, you can speak with a nurse; if it is after hours, you will reach the doctor on call.

What are clear liquids?

Clear liquids are any fluid that you can see through. These include tea, coffee (no cream), broth, bouillon, clear soup, plain gelatin (no added fruit, nuts, vegetables, etc.), Gatorade, any soda, and clear fruit juice. Avoid all red and purple liquids since they can resemble blood in the colon.

Where do I go for my procedure?

The location of your procedure should be written on your preparation sheet and a map should be included in the packet of paperwork you receive. Please be aware that our doctors perform procedures at multiple locations, but the majority of our procedures are done at one of three Raleigh Endoscopy Center locations. If you have any questions, contact us at (919) 791-2040.

What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule my procedure?

If you need to cancel or reschedule a procedure, call (919) 791-2040 as soon as possible. Please call at least two business days prior to your appointment to avoid a $150 fee.
