Adult Volunteers
Whether you’re 14 years of age or over 90, UNC Health Rex has more than 80 diverse volunteer positions making it easy to donate your time in a manner that suits both your interests and schedule.
Adult volunteer positions involve various levels of skill, challenge and involvement. Hours and days are flexible, however most positions require a two to four hour per week commitment.
Requirements
- Attend an interview and if placed in a position, be trained in job-specific areas
- Complete an online compliance module
- Complete health assessment to screen for Tuberculosis (TB), Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Varicella (Chicken Pox) and Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
- Complete a criminal background check
- Adhere to all UNC Health Rex policies and procedures, including dress code
- Submission of two references from adults who are familiar with your work ethic and character

Other Available Volunteer Positions (subject to change)
Rex Cancer Center
- Greeter/Ambassador – Greeting and welcoming our patients while helping them get to registration areas and other parts of the cancer center
- Radiation Oncology – Helping our nursing staff facilitate the patient care by performing various duties (restocking, checking patient in, prepping rooms)
- Infusion Volunteer – Helping our nursing staff assist with supporting the patient (providing comfort items and restocking supplies etc.)
Get Real and Heel Cancer Center Rehab Program
- Rehab related program to help our cancer patients regain strength and flexibility after chemotherapy treatment. Volunteers in this area will help patients get through their exercise program while providing comfort and support
Emergency Department (Evenings only)
- Assists staff members with locating patient family members throughout the waiting room. Provides comfort and reassurance to our family members and visitors of ED patients. Overall, responsible for monitoring the ED and helping when/where needed.
Gift Shop
- A fun assignment helping our gift shop staff! Volunteers in our gift shop will interact with patients, family members, and staff. Gift shop volunteers are responsible for checking out customers (cashier), restocking inventory, and other miscellaneous duties.
Guest Services Ambassador (Front Desk/Patient Wayfinding)
- Main desk position helping our patients and family members find their destination in the hospital. This volunteer helps with wayfinding and greeting our customers as they enter the hospital. Volunteers in this position must be ok with walking both short/long distances.
Waiting Room Ambassador
- Responsible for checking on our patients and family members waiting for procedures. Volunteers will help family members back into surgical areas to visit with their loved ones. In addition, this volunteer is responsible for clerical duties
Medical Surgical ICU (Evenings only)
- Helps greet, answer phones, restock supplies, run errands, change linens, and more!
Neuroscience Spine Center (Greeter/Ambassador)
- Responsible for greeting patients as they enter the center while helping them get to their appointment locations.
Patient Care Floors
- Volunteers on patient care floors help our nursing staff with miscellaneous duties that help facilitate the patient care. Some of these duties may include: supporting/visiting lonely patients, supplying comfort items, restock supplies etc.
Patient Transport
- Our patient transport volunteers help our central transport team discharge patients from the hospital. These volunteers are responsible for picking up patients and taking them to other locations of the hospital. Volunteers in this position must be able to walk long distances and push a wheel chair. Please note that additional online training on wheel chair safety is required for this role.
Holly Springs Emergency Department
- Volunteers will help our ED staff turnover rooms, restock supplies, sanitize equipment, and more!
Surgical Services (OR/PACU)
- These volunteers are responsible for helping our surgical services team with patients post-surgery. Volunteers will restock items, locate stretchers, remake beds, and run various errands for the department.
Fur Friends Pet Therapy Escort (Limited Availability)
- Liaison between the handler and pet therapy dog. These volunteers are responsible for facilitating patient visits. Volunteer will be responsible for setting up rooms for visits, providing hand sanitizer, filling out consent forms for visits, and handing out trading cards to patients, staff, and family members who visit.
Rex Food Pantry (Limited Availability – Dual Role with another volunteer assignment)
- Responsible for packing grocery bags from the pantry and delivering them to eligible patients on our daily list. Volunteers will also do inventory, restock the pantry, and pre-back grocery bags for deliveries.
