VolunTEEN Program
The UNC Health Rex VolunTEEN Program gives teenagers the opportunity to contribute to the community while exploring a career in the medical environment. The program provides teenagers with practical experience and practice while developing good work habits. High school sophomores, juniors and seniors ages 14-18 may apply.
VolunTEEN assignments are based on information provided by teens during the interview process and may include areas such as patient care units, day care, the recovery room, office support assignments and more. Duties may include: Interacting with patients, rounding on patient’s rooms, assisting in discharges, restocking supplies, gift shop sales, delivering flowers and amenities, performing data entry and filing, assisting nursing staff with errands, greet patients and visitors to the hospital and help them find their destinations and many other duties. Teens whose parents work at UNC Health Rex will be assigned to separate areas to avoid placing parents in a supervisory role.
General Requirements
- Must be 14-18 and have completed your freshman year in high school before the start of the program you are applying for
- Complete and submit your application
- Submit two references from adults who are familiar with teen’s work ethic and character
- Be available for an interview if contacted
Requirements if you are accepted in the program
- Complete a health assessment at UNC Health Rex Employee Health to screen for Tuberculosis (TB), Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Varicella (Chicken Pox) and Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
- Get an annual flu vaccine (The flu vaccine is only required if you are in the Academic Year Program)
- Attend a mandatory orientation and obtain training in job-specific areas
- While volunteering, teen must wear a uniform consisting of a UNC Health Rex polo, khaki pants, and a UNC Rex Health ID badge.
- Teen must remain on hospital campus during work shifts, unless parents/guardians have provided written permission
2025 Summer Program
The 2025 Summer Program is from June 23, 2025, to August 15, 2025. The 2025 Summer applications will be available online March 3, 2025 – March 5, 2025.
Requirements
- Students must be at least 14 years of age and have completed their freshman year of high school
- Program spans for eight weeks over the course of the summer (June-August)
- Volunteer one day per week, Monday-Friday, for a morning or afternoon four-hour shift
- Must volunteer the first week of the program (June 23, 2025 – June 27, 2025 – assigned day only) .
- Only one absence is allowed in this eight-week program
- Must attend an interview/information session if contacted
- Complete a health screening at UNC Health Rex if accepted into the program
- Attend an orientation if selected to be in the program.
2025 – 2026 Academic Year Program
2025 – 2026 Academic Year Program is from September 8, 2025 – May 15, 2026
Applications for the 2025 – 2026 Academic Year Program will be available online June 30, 2025 – July 2, 2025. Applications submitted after 5:00 pm Wednesday, July 2, 2025, will not be considered.
Requirements
- Must be able to volunteer September 8-12, 2025
- Volunteer one day per week, Monday-Friday, from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
- Program spans for the entire academic year (September – May)
- Students must be at least 14 years of age and have completed their freshman year of high school
- Attend an interview if contacted
- Complete a health screening at UNC Health Rex if accepted into the program
- Attend an orientation if selected to be in the program.
